Washed by the waters of the Atlantic, swept ceaselessly by the trade winds and eclipsed by the imperial cities of the north, Essaouira, Morocco's coastal pearl, treasures a mixed beauty resulting from its turbulent history.
Its year-round mild climate was much appreciated in ancient times by the sailors who called at its shores: Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans called here and it was a Portuguese enclave in the 15th century under the name of Mogador.
Essaouira is a coastal town located 170 kms from Marrakech on the Atlantic coast, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, surrounded by walls that protect it from the wind and the sea.
It has a beautiful Medina where you will find carpets, woollen blankets and silk fabrics with this blue colour so appreciated by Moroccans and tourists.
The Medina of Essaouira offers a great variety of handicrafts. Another important place in Essaouira is its fishing port where you can see the original blue-painted boats. It is one of the most fascinating small coastal towns on the Atlantic coast, with walls dividing the old town into several districts. It surprises with its small straight streets, designed by a Frenchman. After visiting the harbour with its bronze cannons, you can enjoy a seafood lunch. The speciality of the region is the argan tree which produces an excellent oil.
We take you to the Pullman which leaves at 08h30 from Marrakech. On the way there, we will stop to see a typical Moroccan village where the famous Argan oil is produced. Also, you will see the goats climbing on the Argan tree from which the famous Argan oil is extracted.
We will arrive in Essaouira around 112h00 and the Pullman will drop you off at the town square near the port. It is not necessary to ask for a guide, you don't need to be accompanied, the village is small and you will be able to walk around on your own without getting lost.
We recommend you to visit the port and the ramparts which offer magnificent views of the sea. Then stroll around the harbour where you will see many stalls selling fish and seafood. Then stroll through the centre of the town and visit its famous Medina.
Where to eat: Of course, in the beach bars of the port, (prices between 15 & 25€), where you will be offered excellent fish and/or seafood at a good price.
Have a mint tea or a drink in the bar in the square and enjoy watching the locals strolling around.
At 17h00 the Pullman will be waiting for you at the same place to take you back to Marrakech to Riad Tahani around 19h00, where you can relax by the pool or on the terrace.
